A Podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The creation of modern Podcasting is often attributed to former MTV VJ, Adam Curry.
Podcasting was born out of frustration with big media broadcasters dominating the radio market with uninteresting drivel.
Several computer programmers and content producers came together through the internet and the concept of modern Podcasting was born.
The BBC started offering BBC created Podcasts as trial in April 2005. Since the original trial the BBC have started to embrace Podcasting in the way that no major broadcaster has. Now offering more than 30 Podcasts, the BBC has taken the Podcasting charts by storm.
Controversially BBC Podcasts used to consist only of "highlights" from BBC Radio shows, with no original content. This led some in the Podcast community to critisise the BBC for flooding the Podcast market with shows that abide by the original concept of Podcasting.
